Artist Spotlight By ROB ASTOR - CAMERON MIZELL

MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORJazz is the order of the day when discussing CAMERON MIZELL. Hisimpressive list of influences includes a league of heavy hitters fromMILES DAVIS, JAMES BROWN, HERBIE HANCOCK, JIMI HENDRIX, BOB DYLAN, SLY &THE FAMILY STONE, BOOTSY COLLINS, OUTKAST, PRINCE, CHUCK BERRY, DIZZYGILLESPIE, STEVIE WONDER, RADIOHEAD, ASTOR PIAZZOLA, THE BEATLES, JOHNNYCASH, ELLA FITZGERALD, ETTA JAMES, MARVIN GAYE, BECK, B.B. KING, THETIME, and a galaxy more, you know the music has to be superb.Born in St. Louis, CAMERON MIZELL began playing Guitar at the age ofeight. A tireless understanding of music began when he was thirteen andheard MILES DAVIS and JOHN COLTRANE. The following year, he played LeadGuitar in a band called PURGATORY. Next came Mall Food Courts, and thewriting and arranging of music for a ten piece Swing Band followed byplaying in the MISSOURI ALL-STATE JAZZ BAND. Now eighteen years of age,his formal education took place at the University Of North Texas andIndiana University. Real world education continued to come in the formof playing at bars, cafes, festivals, subway cars, and concert halls.CAMERON MIZELL survived the Texas heat by playing Cool Jazz, Bebop, BigBand, and something called EMC-ish. He also played in DOCTOPUS, a HipHop outfit before heading to Indiana. There, he once play Polka at amilitary instillation. Bringing together a fine group of talentedmusicians, CAMERON MIZELL formed a Jazz Trio and an eight piece Funkband. In 2004, he recorded his first CD “Cameron Mizell”.Never content to remain in one place, Cameron relocated to New York Citywith his wife and cats who he says are his biggest fans and critics. Heand a new trio are recording a brand new album. I had the chance to askhim about his music. Here’s what he shared with me:RA: Who are your biggest influences?CM: Practically everything I hear! But recently, and more specifically,I've been listening to a lot of The Meters, James Brown, Grant Green,Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, and Baby Huey. As a musician, Istudied/transcribed a lot of Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans,John Coltrane, and Pat Metheny.RA: Were you trying to emulate their sounds or styles?CM: Not so much, but it's good practice to try sometimes. When I hearsomething I like, I approach it by learning more about what influencedthem. So instead of trying to play like Grant Green, I'd rather golisten to everything he might have been listening too, from his earlierdays playing more straight ahead jazz to the soul-jazz/funk in his lastyears. That turns into an endless path, but very much worth the journey, and it helps me develop my own voice. I think!RA: What are your thoughts on the Internet revolution?CM: It's just the natural development in entertainment. It's amazingwhat you can do, but not surprising. I also don't know that the massesare so great... Not only can we reach more people, but the few peoplethat like to complain about everything can reach everyone too, and itjust takes a few ill-intentioned comments to ruin an otherwise good thing.RA: Any collaborations?CM: I'd like to do another covers album with my friend who sang the lastone. (“Follow Through” was released in 2001 and pulled off the shelf tobe released again in 2007.) It's just for fun, but with a little morefocus, knowing that it'll be released, I'll be pickier about the songchoices and overall sound.RA: Any other projects you like to talk about?CM: Just finishing up my trio CD, which I'll support for a couple yearsas I begin putting together my next idea. I know what my next projectwill be, but it's pretty expansive and is going to take a lot of work, and a lot of great musicians, to be properly realized.RA: When can your fans expect a new release?CM: The new album, “Life Is Loud” will be available mid June 2007!I dropped by CAMERON MIZELL’s MySpace page to sample four of his tracks.“Fearless”, from the new CD, blends everything good about Jazz. ElectricPiano chimes away beautiful melodies, bringing the music a more modernfeel, crossing the greats with the likes of SPYRO GYRA. Get up and danceto this one. Cameron is fearlessly plowing ahead.“Cold Sweat”, another track from the new album moves with a faster Funktempo. Playful Keyboards shimmer against a rollicking Percussionbackdrop until the entire piece gyrates.“The Whipper” comes from CAMERON MIZELL’s EP, “The Epic Of ChesterBustamante” released in 2006. Once again, Modern Jazz dominates themusic. If you’ve ever heard YOKO KANNO’s soundtrack work with SEATBELTS, you get an idea of what to expect of the soundscape. Pure fun, pure Funk. The final track, “Thursdays”, also from “The EPic of ChesterBustamante”, combines Blues and Jazz. The Guitar playing instantly putme in mind of B.B. KING. At some point in the future, I hope CAMERONMIZELL will consider adding a Brass section. Parts of this track, although great sounding as it is, really call out for it in a very good way. With four CDs to his credit, and a blend of sounds flawlessly executed,CAMERON MIZELL is an artist I think you should know about!
Artist Spotlight By ROB ASTOR-BILL TUCKER-

MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORPlay the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles with THE BEACH BOYS hasto be a highlight of any musicians career. BILL TUCKER did just that.Raised in West Covina, CA, BILL TUCKER’s exposure to music began at anearly age. The spark that set his creativity on fire was seeing RICKYNELSON on TV at an early age. Since that time, he has followed his dreamthrough points high and lowBILL TUCKER describes his music as having memorable Melodies, catchyhooks, and jangly Guitar. A slew of artists spanning multiple decadeshave influenced Bill’s music including THE BEATLES, THE BEACH BOYS, THEBYRDS, GROUCHO MARX, CSNY, DWIGHT TWILLEY, PHIL SEYMOUR, CHEAP TRICK,THE EAGLES, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, TOM PETTY, THE CARS, BOB DYLAN,THE MOODY BLUES, SIMON & GARFUNKEL, THE RUTLES, JARS OF CLAY, JAN &DEAN, ABBA, THE MONKEES, BADFINGER, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD, THE BEE GEES,CASTING CROWNS, LINCOLN BREWSTER, THE TRAVELING WILBURYS, BAD COMPANY,AMERICA, and 10CC. Mixing all of those varied musical ingredients cooksa sound Bill describes as a blend of GEORGE HARRISON, THE BEACH BOYS,HARRY NILSSON, THE BYRDS, JEFF LYNNE, THE RUTLES, and TOM PETTY.BILL TUCKER’s first band was THE MALARDS followed by THE SOUNDFOUNDATION which was a high school sponsored New Christy Minstrelsoutfit. He was also a member of JUST BEFORE 60, WACKS, and ALBION MOONLIGHT.With songwriting partner John Simon, Bill nearly landed a recordingcontract in the late 1970s with Shelter Records. Although disappointedby not making the final cut, they continued performing all over SouthernCalifornia. Another near brush with success came when their song “DoYou” was considered for PHIL SEYMOUR’s debut album. Destiny had otherplans. Unfortunately, the track was held back.In 2001, BILL TUCKER and nine fellow AT&T employees were selected torecord a company-wide promo CD entitled “ERICfest”. They met withrecording artist/producer DOUG ROBINSON at Capitol Records in Hollywoodto do a collection of ten songs by THE BEACH BOYS. Bill sang “SurferGirl”. When the CD was released, they performed the songs with THE BEACHBOYS. Bill says the experience re-energized his musical aspirations. Hejoined the sound production crew at his church and soon helped leadWorship singing with THE PRAISE TEAM.Since that time, BILL TUCKER has written and recorded 2 CDs. “Watch OverMe” is a collection of original Spiritual songs, and “Briardale” isMainstream Pop/Rock. Both releases can be found at CDBaby.com, JamRecords, and on iTunes.I had the chance to ask Bill about his musical life. Here’s what heshared with me:RA: When did you start playing music?BT: I think it all began in the late 50's actually. My parents had setme up for accordion lessons. (That was very popular at that time.)However, I happened to see Ricky Nelson that same night on The Ozzie AndHarriett Show. I went in and told my parents, "I don't want to playaccordion. I want to play guitar and sing like Ricky Nelson!" Well, mymom and dad were set back and kind of mad. But when I graduated fromsixth grade they bought me my first guitar. I spent that summer learningall the chords and playing songs like "Michael Row The Boat Ashore." Mymom would take me to the YMCA for group guitar lessons.RA: Who are you biggest influences?BT: Probably the first band to really get my attention was The BeachBoys. They had the whole surfin', cars and girls thing going on in theirsongs. And the harmonies were captivating. That was the early 60's andit wasn't long before The Beatles arrived. I had a small transistorradio at that time and I still remember "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" comingon. It sounded very weird to me... kind of like aliens or "The PurplePeople Eater". Very different. My mom took me down to Savon Drug Storewhere they had their albums set up on an end aisle. What an experience!RA: Did you set out to emulate their styles or sounds?BT: My friends and I would ride our bikes across town to Wallich's MusicCity and look through the sheet music and memorize the chords. We didn'thave enough money to buy them but we wanted to learn to play the songs! And of course, when their movies came out, we would emulate theirmannerisms.RA: How many albums have you released?BT: I've actually released 2 albums through CDBaby. My first effort in2005 was "Watch Over Me". It's a collection of Christian based songsthat I wrote after a spiritual re-birth. In that process, my musicalaspirations were re-energized. I followed that release with a mainstreampop/rock project called "Briardale".RA: Any links?BT:http://www.myrealtalent.com/BILL_TUCKERhttp://www.myspace.com/williamhtuckeriiihttp://www.cdbaby.com/cd/btuckerhttp://www.cdbaby.com/cd/btucker2RA: Have you collaborated on anything?BT: Lots of things, actually. I wrote for several years in the 70's withJohn Simon. He and I formed a bunch of bands and almost signed withShelter Records. We got real close to cracking the nut, but no cigar...However, one good thing came out of that dance. We met Saul Davis (PhilSeymour's manager-Twilley/Seymour) and had our song "Do You" slated forPhil's debut album. But at the last minute, the big boys pulled it andso it goes...RA: Can your fans expect anything new in the near future?BT: I've been writing steadily since last summer and plan to haveseveral musician friends help me out on my next effort. I think thatwill bring a lot more energy into the tunes as well as the magic createdwhen you open up to new thoughts and ideas.RA: What are your thoughts on the discovery of music over the Internet?BT: My daughter talked me into signing up for a MySpace account. Shesaid, "Dad, you need to get your music out there and lots of bands aredoing this on MySpace.” So, now that I've done it, I think it's thebiggest door that's ever opened! Not only for me to get my stuff someexposure but also for all the great unsigned music I've discovered inthe process! Here on MyRealTalent, BILL TUCKER shares five tracks with his listeners. The first is “When Children Grow Up”. This reflective, melancholy trackplays like a mature BEACH BOYS single, one where the band has come to annew point in their life. It’s a finely honed look at kids from the pointof view of a father watching the little ones get older. The Harmoniesand Guitar twang are all present in all the right places. “When ChildrenGrow Up” is a track of perfection. From the reflective to the tough and street wise “That’s My Car” iswhere we head next. This piece is where a perfect hybrid of THE BEACHBOYS and JAN & DEAN culminates Guitar fell and Lyrical style. It soperfectly fits into those songs I remember from 8-track tapes, I have towonder if either band passed this one over and why."Hallelujah", while Worship in nature, has a feel reminiscent of THEBEATLES. A more Rock & Roll Guitar is present, counter balanced by therelaxed vocals of Nancy Andeel.“Shadows On The Run” seems to blend Blues and Jazz, producing a balladbased on the dream of trying to write a song. I can relate to this onefrom personal experience. We all have those times when there’s somethinginside of us trying to find a way out. Once born into the world, we wantthe whole world to know about it. Dreams get big, yet we stay anchoredfirmly in the reality of how slowly things really do progress. We chasethose shadows away by holding onto the positive energy. The final track, “In These Days”, combines the musical styles of THEBEATLES and THE BEACH BOYS, finding a combination of Rock and Surfpleasing to the ear. The song structure is more complex, showcasing thetalent it takes to construct something outside the basic formula. Thereal trick is being able to place words up against those patterns. Billhas pulled it off seemingly effortlessly. Now that you know a little about BILL TUCKER, be sure to check out themusic and pick up the CDs.Selected DiscographyERICfest (2001 Various Artists)Watch Over Me (2005)Briardale (2006)

MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORSelf-Produced GLOBAL ROTATION is and Electronic act hitting its stridehaving music featured on radio networks and by topping unsigned chats.Atmospheric Instrumentals, creations transcending the barrier oflanguage, are inspiring. They lift spirits, alter moods, and transportthe listener to other times and places.Immersed in New Romanticism and the Synths defining the 1980s and 1990s,JORDAN DASH, later to become GLOBAL ROTATION, at the age of twenty-one,released a track called “Keeper Of The Light” after spending timetagging DJs. The metamorphosis of his style came with the purchase of akeyboard and the blending of influences from JEAN MICHEL JARRE, GARYNUMAN, KRAFTWERK, and MIKE OLDFIELD. Harmonious soundscapes became aprogression with every new composition.GLOBAL ROTATION’s music is all about escapism, and making the audiencehappy, by transporting them to some beautifully wondrous place. Here atMyRealTalent, you can tune into five such creations. The first of GLOBAL ROTATION’s tracks is the unassuming “Eiffel Girl”. ABeat Box and Electric Bass set the tone for this Dance track, turningvery European in feel by the time Keyboards overlay the rhythm. Italmost whistles, the way guys whistle at pretty girls the world over. There’s a delicate charm, almost feminine in feel, thereby having aperfect title.Thumping along much harder, and at a faster clip, “Dream 2 Dance” wouldfit perfectly in one of those dance arcade games. Every element ofchallenge is present, while cross-currents of sound create alternatinglayers of mood. If R2-D2 suddenly became someone’s stereo system, thisis the kind of music you would hear! Beeping, hooting, bouncing fun.“A Summer Farewell” comes complete with an easily identified Melody. Italmost sounds as if it’s moving at half the pace as the rest of themusic, charging off into the unknown while attempting to break the soundbarrier. Again, there’s a distinct video game feel present in thispiece; the soundtrack to something fast yet fun.Tamer than the previous tracks, “Circles In My Mind” none the less keepsthe same break neck speed as high and low textures undulate through theBeat. “Sun Dance” feels like a continuation of the former, constructedto be less busy while dazzling the senses.GLOBAL ROTATION has mastered the art of Club Music.
Artist Spotlight By ROB ASTOR - EARTHGOAT-

MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORKobe Corman, EARTHGOAT’s singer/songwriter, describes his music ascolors, pulses, and frequencies. Influenced primarily by DAVID BOWIE andPHILLIP GLASS & BERNARD HERMAN, the description is fitting.EARTHGOAT rose from Ambient music. Solid backbeats emerged followed bysurreal distortion, creating the core. The band’s first release, “SexAnd Blood”, fuses Industrial with pure emotional edge. “I’d experiencedthe death of my mother and was mourning,” Kobe explains. “A majority of‘Sex And Blood’ was born of that.”“I’m not listening to what is happening on radio or press or what iscool. That would detract from the originality of this band. Sure, everyone has influences, however I believe EARTHGOAT is more farreaching.” Far reaching they are. But to truly appreciate this fact, youhave to take in their remake of BOWIE’s “Scary Monsters”. Sometimes, influences have a larger impact than we realize. The music is very non-conformist, focused on the dark side of the humanpsyche. Kobe says, “The Darkwave banner fits the band’s description likea glove.”“Sex And Blood” boasts audio artistry that stimulates visuals in themind while pulsing creatively through the Alternative scene. Iinterviewed Kobe for this review. Here’s some of his insight:RA: When did you get your start?KC: Got a good reply from author/director Clive Barker that really gotme believing that it was working. With this kind of endorsement, what more needs to be said?RA: Were you trying to emulate the sounds or styles of your musical idols?KC: No, not at all. It was something that I did consciously whilstwriting the album.RA: How many albums have you released? Any links?KC: One. “Sex And Blood” in 2005.http://www.earthgoat.com/ListeningRoom.htmlRA: Are you currently working on any other projects?KC: Yes, I have finished a project based on poetry/prose called “SkyGod”. It encompasses a lot of ideas based on Mythology, both Greek andEgyptian. It has been a unique outing.RA: Any collaborations?KC: Yes with several artists/musicians and vocalists, however forEARTHGOAT, I mainly do all myself. It's too precious to meto hand it over to anyone else.RA: Can fans expect a new release any time soon?KC: Yes, I'm looking at releasing the second self-titled album by theend of this year.RA: What are your thoughts on the revolution of the Internet bringingundiscovered music to the greater masses?KC: Yes it's good, however, I have been signed to a major previously andknow the exposure one gets through them. However, it is really great forartists of all sorts to get their stuff out there.EARTHGOAT’s music is out there. I dropped by their MySpace page tolisten to four tracks. The brooding drone of “1763” opens with a Bassstrum, building up to an inner storm of music balanced by vocalsevocative of a churning ballad. As nightmarish as some Heavy Metalfantasy, textures create a dark place you catch a glimpse of beforebeing snatched abruptly away.“Golden City” starts like a dark Euro Anthem before taking the sonicform of a jet liner launching itself skyward. The blend is somethingvery NINE INCH NAILS crossed with “Pushing The Sky” by SEAT BELTS.There’s a great use of audio technology while retaining the minimalistapproach Kobe conceived for the album.Punk meets Metal meets Euro Dance creates the tapestry of “The Priest”.Layers of over powering sound almost drown out the vocals, until youcome to the spot where you ascend to a calm haven. Returning to theturmoil must be a metaphor of the sacred and profane, of Heaven andHell, contrasted in music. Pure Gothic in its truest form. It puts me inmind of a TODD RUNDGREN song from the early 1990s called “FascistChrist”. The video was very provocative, featuring images of marchingcrosses and the force feeding of the Bible. Toward the end, the musicchanges, becoming something like a Heavenly Choir. This is the same feelI get in this track.“Scary Monsters” is more scary in EARTHGOAT’s incarnation, churningalong on distorted Guitar, featuring Vocals that almost sound like DAVIDBOWIE himself. Some songs are never meant to be remade in another band’simage, however, EARTHGOAT has done this classic track justice by notonly making it sound like their own, but by also retaining just enoughof the former identity to maintain semblance of recognition.EARTHGOAT has been featured on Australia's prestigious “AMP Awards”. Theband was honored with “Song Of The Week” for their heavy dance single“Astrolabe”.“We’re not listening to what is happening in mainstream or what is theaccepted medium; that would detract from the originality of this band,”says front man Kobe Corman. “This is a piece of art.” And that’s why Ithink you should know about EARTHGOAT.

Promotional Tip by Rob Astor

Promotional TipByRob AstorBefore I get to the Artist Spotlight, I’d like to offer anyone who happens to read this a little advice. There are many artists on MyRealTalentwho are very good and whose music I am coming to enjoy very much. I think, okay, I can go ahead and review them really soon. But, I end up coming to a band page or a biography with next to nothing in the information department. It’s tough and frustrating trying to track down all those other pages you have to find the same results.Very quickly, here’s what I want to suggest to anyone lacking in these areas. Please, tell me all about yourself as a musician. Let me know who you sound like, what you like to play and hear, whether or not you have any albums out, and post links to them. Have a few pictures, even if they aren’t professional. I’m a potential fan! If I like what I see and hear, I’ll go track you down on iTunes or CDBaby. Before I can make a well informed judgment about your music, I need to be well informed. Imagine yourself for a second as a fan of your own music. What would you want to know about yourself and your music from a fan’s point of view? These can be very crucial marketing tools. This will force you to think about who you actually are as well as what you play and put it into tangible perspective. Forget about everyone telling you to condense to six second sound byte format. I need more!I grew up following a lot of Rock & Roll bands in the 1980s. I read tons of magazine articles. I digested and memorized the most mundane facts imaginable. For those of you in your twenties, believe it or not, the Internet didn’t exist back then. Information was limited to press releases, newspaper articles, magazine articles, or whatever you might get from a band’s fan club. (With the Internet, you can get a lot more out there for anyone who might discover you.) Rabidly, I amassed a lot of music out of passion for many bands and artists. There’s a chance I could do that to your music, too, but, you have to share your facts first. If you don’t think you write very well, have a friend do some for you. Or, ask me. I’d be happy to help if I can. Let’s find a way to get the word out about you and all that you do!Now, I’ll get off my soapbox and get on with this week’s review. :-)

MyRealTalent Artist Spotlight By ROB ASTOR

MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORWith influences like THE KINKS, RADIOHEAD, CHRIS CORNELL, THE BEATLES, and JEFF BUCKLEY to name only a few, a band name such as THE PLAYING FIELDS is rather fitting. Fusing a mixture of Garage Band/British Punk/Rock& Roll/Pop is no easy task. THE PLAYING FIELDS makes it work seamlessly. Fluidly moving through a sound combination of THE CURE, RADIOHEAD, WILCO, NIRVANA, and SONIC YOUTH, these players have found their musical field of dreams.THE PLAYING FIELDS’ story began with Stephen Bland from the North London suburb Enfield. In his teenage years, Stephen attended the university in Canterbury while serving as a booking agent for bands as well as promoting clubs. In order for younger brother Michael to look old enough to get into these places, Stephen would dress him in several layers of clothing. Group incarnations came and went with many spirited false starts. After five years, Stephen graduated and decided to see the world, writing a book of poetry along the way. When he returned to London in 1998, he was left feeling empty and directionless. There had to be something more! Living with Michael, Stephen wrote a novel while encouraging his brother to learn the Guitar and Sing. Two years later, Stephen embarked on another adventure, leaving the U.K. for a nineteen country journey as he continued writing. Michael joined him sporadically as he honed his musical skills. In 2002, Stephen’s trip ended and a dull office job looked like his final destination. However, Michael could now play and sing. Weekly meetings at their small apartment consisted of two Guitars, a Bass, and Computer/Keyboards. Energy renewed, they began playing live gigs, although reluctant to do so without a Drummer. The band line-up began to solidify in the next two years. With childhood friend Jeff Baskett, they fixed themselves on dark, intense pieces while retaining melodious lyrics drawn from Stephen’s writings. Stephen sang Harmony to brother Michael’s Leads while Jeff played Bass and Samples. With the addition of a Drummer in 2005, they cut their musical teeth playing live gigs, discovering their material developed in complexity with added hard rhythmic drive. Adding to their lyrical content, Michael created short, emotional pictures which offset Stephen’s detached style. This combination of songwriting Yin and Yang fills the bulk of THE PLAYING FIELDS song catalogue.A first real taste of success and recognition came with the inclusion of the Acoustic song “Valley Of Salt” being featured on the BBC’s television program “Hustle”. Musical spark ignited, THE PLAYING FIELDS continued to evolve.Reaching the glass ceiling of music in Israel with the groups MUSIC OF COINCIDENCE and THE FOLLOWING, famed solo artist Ron Rosenblum relocated to the United Kingdom. He joined THE PLAYING FIELDS, taking up Drum duties and provided the solidifying missing link to their sound; driving Percussion.Performing professionally with orchestras in Australia and Europe, Hannah Sless decided to reinvent herself in the Pop/Rock arena. As a member of THE PLAYING FIELDS, she provides Classical accompaniment to the often melancholy aspects of the music and occasional Backing Vocals to add depth.THE PLAYING FIELDS call their sound “Urban Desert”. They have recently released their debut album, “Hello New World”, on CactiShed… Records and promote themselves through the use of the electronic medium, including here at MyRealTalent and MySpace. On MyRealTalent, they offer fans a glimpse into their music through four tracks. The first, “Glass & Concrete”, has a sound and feel not unlike a pared down U2 track, where the lyrics reflect the city as they perceive it; sad, lonely, and unknown.“Protect The Humans” starts out like an A Capella prayer, calling out for a hero before launching into pounding Drums and a sustained Guitar howl. The roots of European Punk flow through the music as easily as the Vocals which are similar to TREASON or QUEENSRYCHE.Much more mellow, “The Girl In The Machine” could easily double as a song for CREED. The lyrical content paints the poetic images of the band’s signature lyrical style while the music remains gentle and mellow against a fine blend of Acoustic and Electric Guitar mixed perfectly with Bass and Brushed Percussion. It’s hard not to feel the emotional level coming from within the song’s soul. The final offering is the title track to their album, “Hello New World”. Lyrical content speaks of breaking away from the expected tradition to explore what’s beyond. Certainly, THE PLAYING FIELDS do go beyond the expected norm and break a few traditions to create their own. They have a very well-honed sound and style. The years it took for them to reach this point were well worth the effort and life experience. Taking the journey crafted them into who they are. THE PLAYING FIELDS do have something to offer. You can hear it for yourself by picking up their debut album, or by catching these upcoming shows:May 26, 2007 at The Borderline London, London and South EastJun 10, 2007 at The Spice of Life LondonJun 19, 2007 at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen London, London and South EastAug 16, 2007 at Edinburgh Fringe Festival; Edinburgh, ScotlandAug 17, 2007 at Edinburgh Fringe Festival; Edinburgh, Scotland------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORBOOTS FACTOR is the pet project of Acoustic rock artist Brian Factor, Drummer for STEPHEN KELLOGG & THE SIXERS. He’s finding his creative side when the band is off the road. To fill in one of those long periods during 2006, Brian booked time in a home studio owned by a Bass player for a well known PINK FLOYD cover band in New Jersey.Brian had what he calls “sketches of songs” to work with. The basics were all worked out. He’d be playing the Guitars, Drums, and doing the Vocals. The blueprint of development began with Acoustic Guitars, Drums, and then end with everything else. With help from his friend Stephen Kellogg, they worked on a song originally titled “It’s Over Now” that, at three in the morning, became “Inasmuch” the early morning it was recorded. With the addition of Keyboards, the song was complete and is showcased on the four song EP, “The January Bridges”.Recently I requested a short interview with Brian. Before I talk a bit about his music, here’s what Brian shared with me:RA: How many albums have you released?BF: Two EPs; January Bridges (2006) and Dead Language Demos (April, 2007).RA: Any Links?BF: http://www.myspace.com/bootsfactorRA: Who are your main musical influences?BF: RYAN ADAMS, WICO, BOB DYLAN, PEARL JAM.RA: Were you trying to emulate the sounds or styles of your musical idols?BF: From a sonic point of view, yes. Many of my influences have created amazing sounding albums, which is part of why they are my "idols". I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile, but I am very cognizant of the sounds of each instrument, texture, E.Q., etc. However, on my EPs, I've always tried to stay true to myself, and not really think about where my sound is coming from, more than what I'm trying to say, and what the song is about. I love when people will write me and say "You sound like Arlo Guthrie" or something... I've never listened to Alice's Restaurant or anything by Arlo Guthrie, so I think it's fantastic to have that mentioned!RA: When did you get your start?BF: Well, my full time job right now is actually being the drummer for a national touring act, STEPHEN KELLOGG & THE SIXERS. We were on Universal for our first album, but decided to go with an indie record label for our second. The label is called EverFine Records and is run by the band OAR and their management. Hopefully, it will be a good fit...Part of being a touring musician, is that when you are off the road, it's usually for large blocks of time; one month, two months in a row. So, I would write music in my off time, record demos, put them on MySpace... I think also having a curiosity about how it would feel to throw your own music into the wild was very tempting for me and I'm glad I did it... I feel very lucky to have a fan base that is interested in my music. THE SIXERS have very dedicated fans and always have an ear on what all the band members are doing.RA: What are you thoughts on the revolution of the Internet bringing undiscovered music to the greater masses?BF: I think for the most part it is a good thing. Maybe the quality of the music has become watered down, because these days, anyone can own a pro-tools rig in their basement and release albums on iTunes... But as a whole, and from an artist's point of view, it is simply great. From the internet, a much larger and captive audience is possible, sometimes without leaving your home. Of course, there is nothing more effective than touring, but selling and getting your music out there to people who would like it, but aren't necessarily seeking it out, is something great, which this industry has never seen before and is still trying to get its bearings on. Seven or eight years ago, with the craziness of Napster, there was a huge stigma on getting music over the Internet; you were stealing it, the quality wasn't very good. That was all true. I remember being in college and trying to download two songs over night through a phone line, waking up the next day and having only half of a song on my computer (still hilarious to think about...). Since then, there have been so many leaps and bounds, and some hefty regulation on getting the artist his cut, that it has basically become the mainline for buying music...RA: Have you done any collaborations?BF: Stephen and I have collaborated on many occasions and I hope to do more writing with him. On my first EP, we wrote “Inasmuch” together, and out of everything I've written, that song stands out as actually "finished". Yeah, I kind of have a tendency to start something, and by the end of the day, concede and tell myself "Yeah, this is good..." Not really sure if that's the best way to go!RA: Can fans expect a new release any time soon?BF: Well, I just released my second EP on iTunes, “Dead Language Demos”, a couple of weeks ago. These EPs are only available on iTunes, so I've been tempted to print some discs up to sell at shows, etc. As far as new material goes, I'm in my off period, so I'm writing as we speak. I hope to release something very soon, to all my adoring fans (all seven of them!).Seven fans indeed! You will see on his MySpace page that Brian has more than a paltry seven! It’s on this page where you can hear five of Brian’s tracks. The first is an Acoustic version of “Starting To Blur”. From the onset, you can hear the vocal influences of BOB DYLAN and PEARL JAM. Voice and Guitar compliment each other, bringing a mellow side to something that could be a power ballad with the right arrangement.“Well It’s All Right” recalls the 1990s stylings of DEEP BLUE SOMETHING and VERTICAL HORIZON, joining lyrics of moving on with catchy Acoustic flavored Pop.Reminiscent of ERIC CLAPTON and JONI MITCHELL, “Can’t Shake You Molly” opens with gorgeous Acoustic Guitar, weaving between soft Electric Guitar and Percussion. The vocals feel familiar, remaining as relaxed and nonchalant as the music.Contrary to the Acoustic version, “Starting To Blur” in full format has something more to offer. There’s a distinct pulse to the song. Cross-currents of texture missing in the former bring added depth and dimension the second time you hear it. The vocals are also less restrained, putting the listener in touch with a variant emotional level. You no longer hear DYLAN. You hear Brian. The last track, “Inasmuch” relies on Rhythm Guitar to carry the bulk of the music while the words are sung like someone reading a nursery rhyme. The song is constructed around a pleasing melody minus the trappings of formula. Whatever contribution Stephen lent to Brian in penning this track has really paid off. Easily, it’s one of the best.Be sure to catch STEPHEN KELLOGG & THE SIXERS when they come to your town. In the mean time, check out Brian’s EPs on iTunes. Brian Factor and his BOOTS FACTOR is an artist I think you should know about!

MyRealTalent Artist Spotlight By ROB ASTOR

MyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORA band named after a popular bad word? There has to be a story here!According to TABARNACOS SURFERS, the word “tabarnacos” is a name given to French Canadians (they are based in Montreal, Quebec) taking a vacation in Acapulco, or some other beach in Mexico.Apparently, French Canadians on holiday drink a lot of beer and party all through the night! Such shocking behavior! And, they tend to loosen up and use foul language! Doubly shocking! (None of us have ever been guilty of this, have we?) When cursing, instead of using the seemingly universal popular curse word vocabulary, French Canadians replace it with various religious words. The most popular is “tabernacle” (a little church closet) pronounced as “tabernac”. Because of the regional popularity, Mexicans have labeled French Canadians as “Tabarnacos”.Calling themselves TABARNACOS SURFERS has helped to elevate the band’s popularity on MySpace. Mexican surf music lovers recognize the name and that they are from Montreal. TABARNACOS SURFERS is a relatively new passion of the group’s members; brothers Guy Poulin on guitars and Andre Poulin on Drums, with childhood friend Pat Myette on Bass. They took an interesting approach to leaning to play music while building plywood and metal Guitars strung with fishing line and using Skill saw blades as stand-ins for Cymbals. Billiard tables often became their stages. With a steady diet of maple syrup, beer, and beaver (the animal), the trio saved enough money to buy real instruments. For several years, they played with a wide variety of musical groups learning Metal, Rock & Roll, Funk, and Jazz. They returned to their Rock roots, writing and performing instrumentals influenced by the likes of LINK WRAY, AC/DC, DICK DALE, VENTURES, and ENNIO MORRICONE.Melodic Surf to Garage Rock, TABARNACOS SURFERS approach their music in an abrasive way, stamping it with their personal touch. Utilizing the technology of the Internet, they’re reaching greater masses with numerous videos posted on YouTube. Here at MyRealTalent, TABARNACOS SURFERS offer up four of their finest tracks, comfortably within the Surf Music vein, while cueing up that abrassive craftsmanship for which they are steadily becoming known. The first of these tracks is entitled “4 AM”. Straight up Instrumental Surf music rules here, leaning toward the sound of the ever popular “Wipe Out”. However, the ending is much more in tune with a 1970s Rock anthem that refuses to end, blasting multiple punctuations, working the crowd into a frenzy.“Bubble Gun” and “Lonely Billy” evoke images of Old West America. On the former track, you’ll discover a hybrid of Surf music and up-tempo Cowboy complete with galloping Guitar and powerful Percussion. There’s a chorus part in “Bubble Gun” begging for lyrics. I found this little melody irresistible. With “Lonely Billy”, it’s easy to imagine Clint Eastwood riding out across an open prairie. Clever use of Guitar sounds separates this track from the sound of “Bubble Gun”. Although very similar, they have unique structures setting them apart.“Rocket no9” is Driving Rock, the Surf twang electrified! From this combination comes a track with a more hardcore Punk sound. At the same time, the band dishes up melodic Lead Guitar you might expect of your favorite Speed Metal Guitar Hero. All the band’s influences are present in this track. Fused and melded seamlessly, with this track, TABARNACOS SURFERS also perfects and surpasses them.If you happen to be in Montreal in May or June, you can judge for yourself by catching TABARNACOS SURFERS (French Canadian, eh?) shows at:La grande veillée des Patriotes 2007 "La Place à Côté" on May 20th.& Café Campus avec Les Jaguars, The Burnin' Sands et Les Sunburst on June 9th.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Artists You Should Know AboutByROB ASTORThe theme between the two artists I chose this week is they’re both from Canada. KIRBY IAN ANDERSEN of SHINJUKU ZULU and K.I.A. is based in Toronto, and quickly finding success. Of the Internet revolution, he says it’s, “Fantastic! An indie can now have worldwide distribution, worldwide airplay, and worldwide promotion. Before the Internet, it was just way too expensive for an indie.”As a composer/lyricist/producer, Kirby’s worked with vocalists spanning diverse musical genres including Rap, Reggae, Blues, Folk, Pop, Opera, Ragtime, Choral, Choirs, Jamaican Toasters, and even Cheerleaders. He began his musical endeavors in 1999, synthesizing Aboriginal/Tribal music (Burundi Drumming, for example) with Electronica (KRAFTWERK).KIRBY ANDERSEN graduated from Calgary University with a degree in English Literature. Following the urge to travel, he moved to Tokyo and found inspiration in the wonderful ironies of Japanese culture; ancient temples contrasted with a highly technological society. Kirby found his way to Toronto by way of Los Angeles. There, he worked on his debut album, “Shinjuku Zulu”, recording under that name at Neuphoria Recordings. Freely mixing Electronica and World on every track, and adding an eclectic mix of vocalists earned SHINJUKU ZULU due praise in the Canadian press. For his following two releases, Kirby recorded under the name K.I.A. and returned to SHINJUKU ZULU for his fourth project. KIRBY IAN ANDERSEN’s efforts have led to some noted awards, including being a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition as well as a finalist in the Best Dance/Electronica Song Independent Music Awards for the track “Da Riddim Griffin”. ("Make Me Shake" was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.) The track "Shanghai Masai" was a U.K. Songwriting Competition semi-finalist while “We Do Supersonic” was used as the theme for the Serbo-Creole Speed Yoga Championships. SHINJUKU ZULU was the 2006 TIMA winner in the Urban Category.Rave press reviews have only helped. Kirby is praised for his songwriting and musicianship. He also has a knack picking just the right vocalists for his music; singers with chops and real talent. Currently, he’s remixing tracks form “Various Chimeras” for release in late 2007 to early 2008. As with most modern day artists, he has numerous Internet pages, including one at MySpace, which I do recommend you go check out.I took the time to listen to some of Kirby’s SHINJUKU ZULU tracks over at SonicBids.com. The first, a track called “Make Me Shake (Gimme Some Crush Crush)”, embodies what’s best about Dance music. The beat is heavy, and unusual, departing from the expected European Club feel. His use of sounds create a cross between Pop and Electronica, successfully bridging any commercial gap.“Dirty Liar” blends music with a deep meditative or spiritual feel with a backbeat and contrasting lyrics about someone admitting the fact that he’s a dirty liar. This isn’t your average Rap song, and I’m a hard one to win over for that category.Next up is a super fast romp in a track blending Far Eastern influences with a pounding Drum Machine. “Da Riddim Griffin” features some fine vocal moments while calling up images of Geisha Girls prancing around a concert stage.Alternately, “Shanghai Masai!”, built around a heavy Funk beat, features another Rap vocal I don’t mind listening to at all. Kirby’s lyrical style and visual images come through with Urban convulsion in the this addictive Dance track.Head out to iTunes to find the albums.KIRBY IAN ANDERSEN, whether he’s writing and recording as SHINJUKU ZULU or as K.I.A., has something for every listener. That’s why I think you should know about him!DiscographyShinjuku ZuluShinjuku Zulu (2001)Various Chimeras (2006)Various Chimeras Instrumentals (2006)Various Chimeras Remixes (TBA)K.I.A.Adieu Shinjuku Zulu (2002)Sonorous Susurrus (2004)

Artists You Should Know About by Rob Astor

Read more from ROB ASTORMyRealTalent Artist SpotlightByROB ASTORCurrently, the most popular musician on this site is a guitarist with over thirty years of musical experience, ANGELO SANTORO. He has amassed an impressive body of work throughout his career, including having a musical group (ORIENTAL GUITARS) constructed around his playing style. ANGELO SANTORO’s rise to a professional level began in 1968 with the formation of Psychedelic/Progressive European group THE FLOATING FUDGE FEATURING THE COSMIC DEALER. The band name was later shortened to COSMIC DEALER in time for the release of their debut singles. Soon after, their first and only album, “Crystallization”, was released, featuring music offered up in a Hard Rock style defining the counter culture of the early 1970s.Although the music didn’t achieve the success hoped for by COSMIC DEALER, they were a regular touring act and scored a television performance. The fate of the group, however, was to fade into the misty annals of the music world. With the passing of the group’s vocalist/guitarist and the departure of ANGELO SANTORO, the band’s days were numbered. For a short time, ANGELO SANTORO returned to a new COSMIC DEALER line up to help record demo tracks. In 1973, COSMIC DEALER parted company.“Crystallization” has enjoyed cult status. Music collectors specializing in European Psychedelic Rock value the album at between $300 and $650. A pretty nice compliment by anyone’s standards!ANGELO SANTORO’s next project was the first Brazilian band in Holland, PALMEIRA. Much like the previous band, there was one release, “Palmeira”, and a seeming destiny toward ANGELO SANTORO only appearing on treasured future collector’s items. However, in 1979, ANGELO SANTORO embarked on an extensive solo career, releasing eight albums beginning with “For You”, music flavored with Latin Fusion. For his second release, “Land Of The Pharao”, ANGELO SANTORO returned to his Surf Guitar Instrumental roots while retaining a Psychedelic edge. ANGELO SANTORO also played in THE NOBEL BAND for eleven years and spent two years in AFRODISIA.With success smiling on ANGELO SANTORO, 1992 may have geared up his career an extra notch when he co-founded ORIENTAL GUITARS. The band appeared on the 1996 release WHAT’S IN THE PUB featuring their track “Oriental Guitars”, receiving acclaimed world wide attention.Requests for additional material and live performances led to gigs at local radio stations and festivals such as the their 2000 billing at the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival in Lancashire, England where the band also played the following year.Keeping current with musical trends, ANGELO SANTORO can easily be found on popular Internet music sites, including MySpace. Here at MyRealTalent, he offers up five tracks spanning his many styles. “Abdulla un Mexico” begins with a BEACH BOYS’ “Kokomo” feel. The music turns into a fusion of styles; Industrial Beat, Electronic flavorings, Far Eastern textures, and Blues Harp. There’s also a creative inclusion of a wide variety of uses for sounds from Apple’s GarageBand software. On the track “Exotic Guitars”, there is straight forward Surf music. In fact, this instrumental sounds like the soundtrack accompaniment to a gritty 1960s Hawaiian film. A clever mixing of fine Electric Guitar work retains the essential twang.ANGELO SANTORO’s next title, “Surfin' On The Nile”, should lead the listener to think of Egyptian style music. No disappointment here. The use of guitar as Surf music made over to sound ethnic is the selling point of this track. The craftsmanship is superb. I’d even go so far as to call it Progressive in its execution.Without a clue as to the depth or meaning of the title “Tapjos”, I listened to really explore the music. What I heard is a blend of Folk and Electric Guitar, something that reminded me of a band of cowboys in the American Old West. Slowed down, you might easily hear the underlying music in this track during a tense gunslinger shootout scene. There’s an upbeat gallop created by the Percussion and Bass while the Guitar tells the story. The final offering, “Kiowa Moon”, begins with a 1970s rock guitar opening leading into heavy Percussion. There’s a Psychedelic feel, as if visiting the dreams that inspired JIMI HENDRIX, while the chunky Guitar calls up images of JOHNNY CASH. A tribal beat brings up images of Native American dance festivals around a roaring fire under a brilliant starry sky and full moon. Without using the instrument itself, there’s enough sound to imagine Keyboard layers. Dual Guitars later in the track bounce through the soundscape with alternately complimentary and conflicting echoing effects. Progressive music not only lives, it thrives.ANGELO SANTORO can be heard on over thirty releases. If recent successes are any indication of things to come, we can look for him to appear on thirty more, a few of them ultimately becoming coveted collector’s items.Selected ANGELO SANTORO DiscographyCosmic DealerThe Scene (Single - 1971)Head In The Clouds (Single - 1971)Crystallization (LP - 1971)VPRO Nederpop (1968 - 1975 - Diverse Uitvoerenden)Cosmic Dealer (1989 - Bootleg)Cosmic Dealer (1993 - CD)Cosmic Dealer (2000 - LP)Pseudonym Sampler (Volume 1)SoloFor You (1979)Land Of The Pharao (1981)Palmeira (1983)D'r Echt Pop (1984)Psychedelic Surf (1988)Pacific Sunset (1990)Rockabilly's Story Vol. 9 - Rockhouse (LP - 1991)Kiowa Moon (1993)Rockabilly's Story Part 5 - Rockhouse (CD - 1993)Exotic Guitars (1995)Smiling Ears (1996)What's In De Pub - Sahara Drums (CD - 1999)Ghost Riders In The Sky (CD - 2004 - Stylus Records U.K.)Santoro 8 (2005)Oriental GuitarsWhat's In The Pub (1996)Oriental Guitars (Various Artists)What's In De Pub (1999)Oriental Guitars (Various Artists)The Nile (Single - 2001)Oriental Guitars (CD - 2003)Palesteins And Jews (EP CD - 2004)Experience (CD - 2005)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artists You Should Know AboutByROB ASTORWith so much focus on Progressive music in the first half of this review, I felt it might be appropriate to continue the trend in this half.I’d like to take a few moments to introduce you to a an artist who is referred to as “The Queen Of Symphonic Rock” by her fans. Her name is LANA LANE.Hugely popular in Japan and Europe, LANA LANE’s strengths lie in a well blended mixture of poetic images (think STEVIE NICKS) and powerful vocals alternating from soft to soaring (think of a young ANN WILSON of HEART). LANA LANE has the vocal chops to take on some of Rock & Roll’s biggest names (LED ZEPPELIN’s “Kashmir” and “No Quarter”, PINK FLOYD, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA’s “When Time Stood Still”, ANN WILSON Of HEART’s “Dream Of The Archer” and “Johnny Moon”, GRACE SLICK Of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE’s “White Rabbit”) and the ability to bring added softness to standards (“Autumn Leaves”). Since 1995, she has released numerous albums, amassing a catalog that takes twenty years for most popular artists to record. In 1998, the Japanese label Avalon was launched with LANA LANE as the flagship artist. She began touring extensively in 1998, releasing albums to critical acclaim and gaining a following, including here in the United States. Her versatility crosses genres ranging from Jazz, Acoustic, and Metal. Some of the most beautiful songs she’s ever recorded you will not find on popular radio. The many influences she cites trickle into LANA LANE’s music, bringing added depth of talent, not to mention sheer listening pleasure. In 2007, LANA LANE shared the spotlight with her husband ERIK NORLANDER (who is a solo artist in his own right as well as a member of the ROCKET SCIENTISTS) in Europe supporting their newest releases. LANA LANE can easily be found at TheTank.com and she shares a page with Erik on MySpace.LANA LANE is an artist I think you should know about!Selected LANA LANE DiscographyLove Is An Illusion (CD - 1995)Curious Goods (CD - 1996)Garden Of The Moon (CD - 1998)Echoes From The Garden (CD EP - 1998)Live In Japan (CD - 1998)Love Is An Illusion 1998 (w/Bonus Tracks) (CD - 1998)Ballad Collection (CD - 1998)Queen Of The Ocean (CD - 1999)Echoes From The Ocean (CD EP - 1999)The Best Of Lana Lane 1995-1999 (CD - 2001)Secrets Of Astrology (CD - 2000)Ballad Collection II (CD - 2000)Ballad Collection Special Edition (CD - 2000)Love Is An Illusion Special Edition (CD - 2001)Lana Lane & Erik Norlander European Tour 2001 Souvenir (CD - 2001)Project Shangri-La (CD - 2002)Curious Goods Special Edition (CD - 2002)Garden On The Moon Special Edition (CD - 2002)Covers Collection (CD - 2003)Lana Lane & Erik Norlander European Tour 2003 Souvenir (CD - 2003)Winter Sessions (CD - 2003)Return To Japan (CD - 2004)Return To Japan (CD - 2004)Storybook: Tales From Europe And Japan (DVD - 2004)Lady MacBeth (CD - 2005)10th.
